Biography

OLAF WIEGHORST (1899 - 1988): Olaf Wieghorst was a Danish-American painter and illustrator best known for his highly detailed paintings of the American West. Born in Viborg, Denmark, in 1899, he immigrated to the United States as a young man and eventually settled in New York City. After serving in the U.S. Army Cavalry, Wieghorst worked as a mounted police officer in New York before moving west and pursuing a career as a professional artist. His firsthand experience with horses, firearms, ranch life, and the Western landscape became central to his art. Wieghorst was particularly admired for his paintings of cowboys, Native Americans, cavalrymen, horses, and dramatic Western landscapes, which he rendered with meticulous attention to historical detail and atmospheric light. He became a prominent member of the Western Artists Association and exhibited widely, with his work entering numerous private and museum collections. Wieghorst spent his later years in El Cajon, California, where he continued painting until his death in 1988. He remains recognized as one of the important American Western artists of the 20th century.
