This expressive colour etching reflects Jim Dine's deeply personal and autobiographical approach to art. Dominating the composition is an intense portrait emerging from a vibrant arrangement of colourful flowers. The contrast between the contemplative expression and the richly coloured lilies and blossoms creates a powerful dialogue between vulnerability, beauty and the passing of time.

Throughout his career, flowers became one of Dine's most poetic and recurring motifs. Rather than functioning as decorative elements, they serve as emotional symbols, reflecting memory, identity and human experience. Combined with his energetic linework, rich textures and expressive mark-making, the composition possesses both remarkable intimacy and visual strength.

Jim Dine (born 1935) is one of the most influential American artists of the post-war period. Internationally acclaimed as a painter, printmaker, sculptor and poet, he has developed a highly personal visual language over more than six decades. Rather than depicting everyday objects as symbols of consumer culture, Dine transformed recurring motifs such as flowers, bathrobes, hearts, tools and self-portraits into intimate expressions of memory, identity and emotion. His masterful use of line, texture and colour gives his works a remarkable balance between spontaneity and technical precision.

Throughout his career, Dine has exhibited extensively in leading museums and galleries worldwide. His works are represented in major public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Centre Pompidou, Paris, Tate Modern, London, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Presentation

Jim Dine (born June 16, 1935) is an American pop artist. He is sometimes considered to be a part of the Neo-Dada movement. He lives and works in New York. Jim Dine was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, attended Walnut Hills High School, the University of Cincinnati, and received a BFA from Ohio University in 1957.

In 1962 Dine's work was included, along with Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Dowd, Phillip Hefferton, Joe Goode, Edward Ruscha, and Wayne Thiebaud, in the historically important and ground-breaking New Painting of Common Objects, curated by Walter Hopps at the Norton Simon Museum. This exhibition is historically considered one of the first "Pop Art" exhibitions in America. These painters started a movement, in a time of social unrest, which shocked America and the art world. The Pop Art movement fundamentally altered the nature of modern art.

Dine's work is part of numerous public collections including the British Museum, London; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, D.C.; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, California; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Gallery, London; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York
