Environmental Art

The question of whether art imitates nature is one of the greatest philosophical debates of modern times. Yet the real question today seems to ask instead when art defends nature. This selection of works will allow you to discover the art and artists who defend, denounce or fit into an ecological perspective. Art is an elevated platform for raising awareness of the fight against climate change, and many activists stand out in their artistic endeavors. Banksy, Olafur Eliasson, Lorenzo Quinn... Many recognized artists use their fame for ecological purposes. Talented emerging artists have also joined the ranks of the greatest at Artsper, with projects entirely devoted to the protection of the environment, such as Jérémy Gobé or Angeles Peña. Environmental art comes in different forms. Land Art, represented by Robert Smithson, Andy Goldsworthy and Nancy Holt consists of modifying the environment itself by using materials that are natural or already present there. Reclamation art focuses on the preservation of already polluted places by rehabilitating and "re-naturalizing" them. Finally, one of the underlying movements in environmental art, and yet much more widespread than you might think, is recycled art. This is quite simply creating art through the recycling of industrial materials. Whether it is car bodies, paper, fabric scraps or even cigarette butts, these raw materials will be modeled and assembled to create works of art. The artist César, through his series of compressions, or Vik Muniz using recycled paper, are among the major figures  of the movement. In conclusion, the terms aesthetics and environmental protection are not necessarily incompatible. Get convinced by diving into the selection of works put together by our experts at Artsper.
