Description

Baixinha, Santa Marta, Rio de Janeiro, 2005.
- edition 5/8. Fine-art print on baryta paper.

This artwork captures a striking portrait of Baixinha, habitant of the favela of Santa Marta, in Rio de Janeiro - standing confidently in a dimly lit, rustic setting. The deep shadows and muted tones of the surrounding environment amplify the vibrant red of her top, highlighted against the monochromatic background. The use of chiaroscuro—a stark contrast between light and dark—emphasizes the subject's commanding presence and the texture of her surroundings. Her stance, poised and assertive, draws attention to her determined gaze, suggesting a narrative of resilience and strength. The partially illuminated backdrop hints at urban decay, reinforcing themes of adversity and perseverance. This artwork masterfully blends elements of color, light, and composition to create a compelling image that resonates with emotional intensity and narrative depth.

Vincent Rosenblatt, originally from Paris and a graduate of the ENSBA (National School of Fine Arts), has lived and worked in Rio de Janeiro since 2002, where he initially created a photography studio: Olhares do Morro, in the Santa Marta favela, where he taught photography to young people until 2008.

Since 2005, he has worked with the underground scene of Funk parties and the little-known Bate-Bola Carnival in the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, as well as in the Amazon, especially in the sound system scene in Belém do Pará. He has exhibited at the MEP (Maison européenne de la photographie) in Paris, at the MAR (Museu de Arte do Rio), among others.
