Basquiat x Warhol celebrates one of the most legendary collaborations in the history of contemporary art — the one that united, in the effervescent New York of the 1980s, the pope of Pop Art Andy Warhol with the neo-expressionist prodigy Jean-Michel Basquiat. Jérôme Mesnager and Lasveguix extend this mythic dialogue through their own artistic encounter, echoing the spirit of creative brotherhood that bound the two American icons.
Lasveguix deploys here the full richness of his visual vocabulary, direct heir to the — Villeglé, Hains, Rotella — who turned urban tearing into an artistic gesture in its own right. Layers of paper overlap, rip apart, reveal themselves: a poster of Andy Warhol's (the legendary multimedia happening of the Velvet Underground) presides in the upper left, while the iconic portraits of Warhol and Basquiat — drawn from the famous photographs of their promotional boxing duo from 1985 — emerge from the colorful chaos. Pink splashes, flat yellow and red surfaces, and typographic fragments compose a visual symphony evoking the hum of New York walls, saturated with images and memories.
At the heart of the composition, Jérôme Mesnager's intervention is immediately recognizable: his (White Man), the universal and luminous silhouette he created in 1983, stands out in a dynamic, almost moving posture. This emblematic figure, which the artist has scattered on walls around the world — from Ménilmontant to the Great Wall of China — becomes here the link between the two American masters. A symbol of peace, strength, and light, the White Man dialogues with the ghosts of Warhol and Basquiat, as if Paris were reaching out to New York across the decades.
The work establishes a fascinating double lineage: it inscribes French street art (Mesnager is one of its historic pioneers) within the continuity of 1980s New York energy, while revitalizing the spirit of Nouveau Réalisme through Lasveguix's contemporary practice. One also finds nods to pop culture (a silhouette of Darth Vader in the lower left), the date "AUGUST 2023" anchoring the piece in its time, and the crossed signatures of both artists sealing this collaboration.
Basquiat x Warhol is not a mere nostalgic citation: it is a of creative friendship, a bridge thrown between generations and continents. Mesnager and Lasveguix pay tribute here to two tutelary figures while affirming their own language — proof that urban art remains a living ground for dialogue, where icons are passed on like torches.
Presentation
Jerôme Mesnager joined the École Boulle in 1974, where he followed the cabinetmaking course, and where he stayed as a teacher. In 1979, he joined Yves Got's and Georges Pichard's comics course. The two were teaching at the Duperré School.
In 1982, he co-founded Zig-Zag, a group of very young artists who decided to take over the streets by drawing graffiti and to occupy abandoned factories through artistic performances.
On January 16, 1983, he invented the man in white, "a symbol of light, strength and peace". Jerôme Mesnager drew this white silhouette in the entire world: from the walls of Paris to theChinese Wall.
In 1990, the artist left his parent's house and moved to Paris. He showed works drawn on wooden fences at the Loft gallery, and published a catalog of these works. In 1995, he produced a large mural painting in the Ménilmontant street in Paris, "C'est nous les gars de Ménilmontant".
Jerôme Mesnager is often associated with Nemo, a character with a black silhouette wearing a raincoat and a hat. He was part of the Paris street art scene, with artists such as Blek le rat, Miss Tic, Jef Aérosol, Némo, etc. and of the Free Figuration movement in the early 80s.
In 2006, he produced a series of paintings inspired by art nouveau and art deco. The same year, hedrew his white characters in the Hôtel des Academies et des Arts in Paris.
