Description
It all began with a sudden burst of energy from within. The fresh poppies, just brought into the studio, blazed with such unbridled energy that it was simply impossible to gaze at them calmly. My hands reached out of their own accord for the large palette knives and tubes of the richest colours.
The work was done in one breath, almost in a trance. At first, quick, broad strokes of a cool background were applied to create a contrasting space, but my thoughts were already revolving around red. When it came to the flowers, the paint was applied without restraint — thickly, richly, in layers, straight from the palette onto the canvas. One could hear the rich sound of the palette knife shaping the relief of the petals, which literally grew out of the surface.
