Description
The creation of this painting was preceded by a long conversation with a wise old man. I found an old earthenware jug in the storeroom, which once belonged to my family. The pale flowers in it have come to symbolise the bright memories of my childhood, which have faded somewhat with the passage of time (which is why the painting's colour scheme is so muted and warm), but still hold within them a vivid red core of emotion.
White and cream-coloured poppies or peonies with red centres symbolise memories, solace and eternal sleep (the memory of the past). The olive and ochre tones around them hint at a connection to the earth and one's roots.
