Description
Steel in the Skin is about what it takes to hold yourself together while you're still becoming. Some strength you choose. Some is put in you by lineage, survival, or time. You don't hide it. You carry it on the surface, and you keep looking forward.
In The Architecture of Becoming, this piece is the load-bearing wall. It shows that to be “under construction" does not mean to be weak. Sometimes, the most finished part of you is the steel you learned to live with
"Steel in the Skin" is a portrait of structure. It maps strength onto the surface with intricate, forged linework against a field of fire. It reminds us that to be under construction is not to be fragile. The steel we carry — inherited, survived, chosen — is what lets us keep becoming. This work asks you to look at the parts that don't break, and to see them as foundation.
Presentation
Gafar Oluwabori Quahar was born in Nigeria. In his paintings, the marks on the faces of his subjects serve as a poignant illustration of the complexities and challenges of the precolonial era in Africa, particularly in Nigeria. Through these markings, he sheds light on the historical narratives of his ancestors and the lived experiences of African people. By incorporating beautiful African motifs into his work, he conveys the richness of the continent's heritage and recounts stories of what transpired in years past. In doing so, he emphasizes African identity and invites viewers to engage deeply with the history and culture of the continent.
At the core of his practice is a strong affirmation of his Nigerian roots, specifically his identity as a Yoruba man. He is passionate about showcasing his heritage and educating audiences about the Yoruba people, one of the most prominent ethnic groups in Nigeria. The Yoruba possess a rich cultural tradition, including distinctive tribal marks historically used by various subgroups, such as the Oyo and the Egba, as forms of identification. By incorporating these marks on the faces of his subjects, he seeks to reconnect with and revive cultural traditions, values, and norms. His artworks are firmly rooted in Nigerian heritage, with a particular emphasis on Yoruba culture, serving both as cultural preservation and visual storytelling.
