Description
Chinese calligraphy, the fundamental art of traditional Chinese culture, is closely linked to Chinese painting in its development, and its history is as long as that of China itself. The painter uses essentially the same materials as the calligrapher (brush, ink and paper). His work is judged according to the same criteria as for the calligrapher, namely the vitality and expressiveness of the brushstroke and the harmonious rhythm of the entire composition.
Chinese calligraphy and painting share the same origin.
Since the dawn of humanity, there has always been a need for human beings to record things. As human society developed, they adopted a way of keeping records using drawings, and eventually invented Chinese characters.
These pictograms gradually evolved from pictorial symbols to characters composed of lines, as people's ability to observe, think, and express themselves improved. Then the amazing and unique art of Chinese calligraphy came into existence.
It is thus easy to see that Chinese calligraphy and Chinese painting are closely linked. Chinese characters, vehicles of Chinese calligraphy, come from natural objects. The older the character, the more it appears in image form, and it is always possible to trace common visual connections in them.
The artist San Zi is immersed in Taoism philosophy. The symbol of his creations are these little Taoist men. He uses the techniques and methods of contemporary painting to create his calligraphy works.
His calligraphies are refined, designated, varied and abstract.
Presentation
Heavily influenced by Taoism, he often signs his works with “Sanzi” (??) which has the metaphysical meaning of “floating”, “freedom” and “humility”. Many of the subjects of his paintings reflect concepts of humanity, cosmos and “wu wei” - action through inaction. He also depicts Taoist view of sexuality: valuing the body and mind as positive assets which generate harmony and balance.
In 1983, Xiaolong enrolled in the Fine Arts Institute of Hunan Normal University in Changsha where he studied traditional Chinese ink painting, calligraphy, as well as European oil painting and sculpture. After graduation, he was granted a post-graduate research scholarship and was also assigned to teach newly enrolled students. Soon after he also gained entry to the Hunan Academy of Art.
He gained recognition in 2005, and is now one of the well-known figures in contemporary Chinese art. With his rising popularity, he was ordered to create one background painting for China Pavilion during the Shanghai Expo in 2010. He lived in several different cities in China, and in 2010 he also set up his first "Sanzi Studio" abroad, in Belleville, Paris.
