Description
*"Joy" — by Gabriela Román Esnaurrizar*
In Joy, Gabriela Román Esnaurrizar captures the lightness of release, transforming gesture and interval into a visual breath held and then let go. This acrylic on canvas (120 x 80 cm) unfolds through expansive horizontal fields, where dense strata of shadow break open into passages of luminous white and unexpected color.
The artist employs an abstract expressionist language, defined by sweeping, decisive brushwork and a deliberate balance between opacity and transparency. The composition moves from weighted bands of charcoal, deep plum, and umber toward open zones of white, pierced by sudden linear flashes of neon green, magenta, and crimson that read like sparks or distant signals.
Streaks of gold and muted ochre run through the lower registers, grounding the piece while the upper section dissolves into pale grays and a sharp line of red, suggesting a horizon that refuses to settle. The vertical format and large scale amplify the sense of expansion — the work does not depict joy as noise, but as space cleared after weight.
By allowing negative space to dominate, Román Esnaurrizar makes silence part of the rhythm. _Joy_ is not exuberant; it is earned. The painting holds the memory of density and chooses to lift, leaving traces of what was without being defined by it.
Presentation
Painting that feels, portraits that speak, abstraction with soul
Gabriela Román Esnaurrizar turns emotion into visual matter. Her work emerges from an inner urgency — a need to translate the intangible into color, form, and texture: the weight of a memory, the stillness of dusk, the intensity of a gaze.
Since 2019, her artistic practice has become a distinct voice in contemporary Mexican painting. She moves fluidly between atmospheric abstraction and expressive portraiture, guided by a deep sensitivity to both nature and human emotion. Though originally trained as a graphic designer, she found in painting a more visceral, instinctive, and personal means of expression.
Her abstract works don't aim to depict—they evoke. Inspired by the silent majesty of the sky, the sea, and shifting light, her compositions are emotional spaces rather than literal landscapes. Layers of paint, texture, and movement invite the viewer to pause, interpret, and connect on their own terms.
In contrast, her portraits place emotion at the forefront. Faces, especially the eyes, become powerful portals—revealing unspoken stories, vulnerability, resilience, or defiance. Each subject becomes a mirror of shared humanity, exploring identity, longing, strength, and transformation.
Gabriela works primarily with acrylics, using brushes, palette knives, and unconventional tools to build unique, richly textured pieces. Her process is intuitive and exploratory—each painting is one-of-a-kind, carrying its own emotional weight.
Her work has been featured in over 30 exhibitions and art fairs across cities such as New York, Madrid, Berlin, Dubai, Hong Kong, Miami, Monaco, Zug, Palma de Mallorca, and Las Vegas. She has been represented by a gallery in New York, and her paintings are held in private collections in Mexico and internationally.
Collectors are drawn to Gabriela's work for its emotional resonance and authenticity. Her pieces are more than visual compositions — they are invitations to feel, reflect, and connect. Her art doesn't just fill a space. It stays with you.
