Description
In this refined work, the artist revisits the classical genre of still life, reinterpreting it through the language of contemporary realist painting. The composition offers a subtle exploration of light, transparency, and materiality, transforming familiar objects into carriers of a distinct emotional atmosphere.
The composition is built around a restrained arrangement consisting of a glass filled with water and several ripe strawberries. Yet beneath this apparent simplicity lies a sophisticated pictorial structure based on the interaction of light, reflections, and chromatic nuances. The transparent vessel at the center becomes a kind of optical prism through which the artist investigates the very nature of visual perception.
Particular attention is drawn to the masterful treatment of light. As it penetrates the glass and water, it creates a complex system of highlights, refractions, and reflections. Flecks of light scattered across the tabletop and background infuse the composition with a sense of living presence, transforming the still life into a poetic meditation on the fleeting nature of a moment.
The color palette is founded upon a compelling dialogue between rich turquoise-blue tones and the vibrant red accents of the strawberries. This contrast not only heightens the visual impact of the composition but also creates an emotional tension between the coolness of space and the warmth of natural form. Painted with remarkable attention to texture, the berries appear to radiate an inner luminosity, becoming symbols of ripeness, vitality, and the sensual fullness of life.
The painterly approach combines the virtuosity of the realist tradition with a contemporary understanding of color and atmosphere. Rather than merely reproducing reality, the artist seeks to reveal the hidden poetry of everyday objects. As a result, the familiar still life acquires a philosophical dimension, reminding viewers of the beauty found in simple moments and of art's ability to reveal the extraordinary within the ordinary.
The painting evokes an atmosphere of tranquility and contemplation, inviting viewers to pause, slow the rhythm of everyday life, and rediscover the value of transient moments. This work would serve as a sophisticated focal point in both a private collection and a contemporary interior, while preserving its emotional resonance and artistic depth.
Presentation
Saskia Rem Brandt is a master of light, virtuosically blending the techniques of the Old Masters with the hypersensitive realism of the modern era. Working primarily in oils, she achieves a signature "inner glow" through the application of up to ten ultra-thin glazing layers. This meditative process requires months of dedication to a single canvas to reach such exceptional depth.
Her work is an exploration of light and texture in ultra-high definition. Whether capturing the pearlescent radiance of a cherry or the complex glints on polished chrome and glass, Saskia transforms the still life into a dialogue between timeless elegance and contemporary brilliance. Her art serves as a call to pause, inviting the viewer to rediscover the value of patience and craftsmanship in an ever-fleeting world.
"My work is an exploration of silence and materiality through the lens of time. By employing the traditional technique of multi-layered oil glazing, I seek to capture that fleeting moment when an ordinary object—be it a ripe pomegranate or cold chrome—transforms into a meditative vessel. For me, the process is as vital as the final glow: each layer of paint represents a week of waiting, turning the act of painting into a physical manifestation of patience in an accelerated age.
I aim to bridge the heritage of the Old Masters with the aesthetics of contemporary hyperrealism. I am fascinated by the way light interacts with surfaces: the soft radiance of pearls, the transparency of organic forms, and the sharp, almost aggressive clarity of metallic reflections. My art is an invitation to pause, reconnecting the viewer with the wonder of the human touch and the enduring power of slow creation".
