Description
Oil and gouache on canvas – 51 × 61 cm – Haitian naive art
This abundant composition by Smith Blanchard immerses us in a lush tropical universe, populated by wild animals evolving amidst exuberant vegetation.
In the foreground, a tiger with yellow and black stripes crosses the jungle, while two zebras appear in the background. On the left, an elephant is partially hidden behind the foliage.
The composition is distinguished by the extraordinary density of its vegetation: palm trees, fruit trees, tropical flowers, and plants with cut-out leaves succeed each other in a profusion of emerald greens, bright yellows, and turquoise blues.
The representation of animals and plants is characterized by meticulous drawing, strong outlines, and a deliberate absence of academic perspective. Each element seems to participate in an imaginary universe where nature, color, and fantasy occupy an essential place.
The work is part of the tradition of Haitian naive painting, while evoking, through its luxuriant character and stylization, the universe of Douanier Rousseau.
Smith Blanchard is a Haitian painter born in 1952, whose work is represented on the international market for naive and popular art.
His production includes, in particular, imaginary landscapes, jungle scenes, animal compositions, and fantastic subjects.
His paintings are characterized by extremely dense vegetation, sustained chromatic harmonies, and a stylized representation of the fauna. The animals, often associated in imaginary environments, occupy an important place in his pictorial universe.
Several of his works have been presented in public sales in the United States and Europe. Catalogs list compositions representing zebras, giraffes, panthers, and elephants, as well as more fantastic scenes.
Presentation
A singular figure of Haitian naive art
Born on August 19, 1952, in Port-au-Prince, Smith Blanchard belongs to the great tradition of Haitian naive painting, of which he is one of the most singular representatives. The son of the painter Sisson Blanchard (1929-1981), a recognized figure of Haitian popular art, he grew up in an environment deeply marked by artistic creation.
His father, who worked at the famous Art Center of Port-au-Prince, introduced him to painting very early and encouraged him to develop a personal language, distinct from his own.
Smith Blanchard thus develops a pictorial universe immediately recognizable, populated by wild animals evolving in lush jungles, abundant vegetation, and imaginary landscapes. His compositions are distinguished by an extraordinary richness of details, vibrant colors, and a very personal stylization of nature.
In his works, the jungle becomes a true imaginary paradise, where exotic animals, exuberant foliage, and tropical flowers coexist. This poetic and generous vision of nature is part of the tradition of Haitian naive art, while developing an original aesthetic, sometimes close to the fantastic universe of Douanier Rousseau.
A recognized artist among lovers and collectors of Haitian painting, Smith Blanchard is featured in the reference work by Michel-Philippe Lerebours, . His work is also represented in the collections of the Marie & Georges S. Nader Foundation, an important institution for the preservation and valorization of Haitian art.
Relatively rare on the market, his paintings are sought after for their chromatic intensity, narrative richness, and the personality of their artistic universe.
With his abundant vision of a nature that is both real and dreamed, Smith Blanchard occupies an original place among the prominent artists of Haitian naive painting of the second half of the 20th century.
