Photograph from the exhibition of the men of Les Roseaux in the Petite Camargue.

The Men who harvest the reeds have a name in the Camargue: sagneurs. In the complex and fragile environment of the marsh, as they say, feminine, they work a space that nature lovers consider a sanctuary, these immense reed beds where rare birds shelter. This report tells of a very old profession in a disputed environment.

Because fish harvesters, hunters, herdsmen and rice growers do not see the future of the delta in the same way. The site of an age-old battle between fresh and salt water, between proponents of dewatering and defenders of the marshes, the Camargue was recognized as a biosphere reserve in 1977, at a time when the profession of sagneur was dying. Saved by the rise of ecological construction, men continue to harvest the reed from which we make pergolas, protective hurdles, roofs for guardian huts, thatched cottages in the Netherlands or in Brière.

This subject tells the story of the life they lead in the small Camargue, near Gallician, their capital. Between Grand and Petit Rhône, ponds of Vaccarès, Scamandre and Charnier, it also takes us through a territory where we do not live like elsewhere, water being both a threat and a treasure.
