Description
Three red bar stools with too many stories to tell. A limited edition photograph of the beautiful colours of an old bar in Antigua Guatemala by Barry Cawston.
From 'The Spaces in Between' series.
A photograph capturing a mood of nostalgic serenity with a cinematic feel. The worn bar counter, featuring a sleek, curved design has a glossy, luminescent surface, possibly suggesting the soft glow of a neon light beneath it. Standing before the bar are three high stools with a minimalist metal frame and vibrant red cushions, which provide a striking contrast to the predominantly muted tones of the space.
The backdrop reveals a timeworn wall with layers of peeling paint, a tapestry of earthy yellows and browns, telling stories of the past. This aged texture speaks volumes, suggesting a space that has witnessed countless conversations and fleeting moments over the years. Above the bar, an organized yet cluttered shelf holds remnants of days gone by – vintage bottles, a classic looking radio, and various knick-knacks – each item a relic, enhancing the overall nostalgic ambiance. The flooring is a fascinating mosaic of green and yellow checkered tiles, their aged appearance further solidifying the vintage charm. The tiles' geometric precision contrasts with the organic erosion of the wall, creating an intriguing visual juxtaposition. The photograph with its meticulous composition and atmospheric depth, balances elements of design and decay, inviting viewers to step into the scene, perhaps taking a seat on one of those inviting red stools, and imagine themselves in a simpler, slower-moving world.
Presentation
Barry Cawston, born in London in 1966, is a British photographer renowned for his striking images that fuse architecture, landscapes, and portraits. A graduate in sociology from the University of Leeds, he studied photography at Kitson College in Leeds between 1989 and 1991. His work is distinguished by an almost painterly approach, where light, color, and texture reveal a unique visual poetry.
Cawston has won numerous awards, including the President's Award at the Royal West of England Academy's (RWA) Open Photography Exhibition. He has also exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Marble Palace of the Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the Völklinger Hütte in Germany, and the Oldenburg Museum. His major project, Threads, A Tale of Two Cities, compares the historic textile cities of Manchester and Kanpur, blending social documentary and architecture.
Based in Axbridge, Somerset, he runs the Drugstore Gallery with his partner Soraya Schofield. His photographic practice encompasses series such as Echoes from the Arboretum, Are We There Yet? (a trip to Banksy's Dismaland) and Russia: Far From Black and White, exploring the beauty of often-overlooked places with a cinematic quality.
