THE ALUMINIUM BOX
A precision-made, square-format presentation slipcase in matte anodized aluminium (silver-grey). It comes in two parts: a shallow lid (Photo 1) and a deep tray (Photo 2 & 4). The interior holds both the framed print and the book, side by side. Affixed to the interior of the lid is the white certificate card.

THE PHOTOGRAPH
Silver gelatin print of a 19th-century Material Testing Machine, a mechanical teaching tool from the University of Tokyo's collection. Mounted with a white embossed mat, in a white frame, and wrapped in clear protective plastic. Part of the Conceptual Forms series (2004–2005), in which Sugimoto photographed scientific models inspired by Marcel Duchamp's The Large Glass.

THE BOOK
Hiroshi Sugimoto: Conceptual Forms, published by Hatje Cantz (Germany). This special edition is bound in pale blue-grey watered silk (moiré fabric) with the artist's name embossed on the cover and a rectangular closure strap. The book features all 44 photographs from the series — divided between Mathematical Forms (plaster stereometric models) and Mechanical Forms (industrial teaching machines) — along with essays. This copy is hand-signed by Sugimoto.

Presentation

Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto lives and works between Tokyo and New York. He studied art at Saint Paul University, Tokyo before joining the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. He later settled down in New York by 1974. 

Hiroshi Sugimoto is interested in the representation of time, of our senses, and our conscience. Through his art, he questions the relationship between human beings and reality. His work has been presented in several public collections including New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and London's National Gallery and Tate Modern.

This multidisciplinary artist not only does photography but also makes sculptures, installations, and is interested in architecture. He creates works by successfully combining Asian and Western culture.
