Poupée de Peau is a photographic series stemming from a research project in which Noémie Ninot gathered descriptions of an “ideal" female appearance from 305 men through dating applications. After meticulously compiling and analyzing the responses, she identified the most frequently recurring physical traits and distilled them into thirty composite archetypes representing a shared and highly standardized vision of femininity.
Using her own face as a matrix, Ninot created thirty handcrafted latex masks based on these archetypes and photographed herself wearing each one. By translating statistical data into performative self-portraits, Poupée de Peau exposes the mechanisms through which beauty standards are collectively produced and internalized, questioning the construction of feminine identity, projection, and the persistence of the male gaze.
Noémie Ninot's practice revolves around repetition as a mechanism of transmission, normalization, and the alienation of bodies. Through the reproduction of gestures, postures, and rituals, she explores intergenerational and social forms of mimicry, seeking to reveal recurring patterns that reflect a collective and systemic experience embedded in women's memory. Working across staged photography, sculpture, video, and installation, she reenacts injunctions surrounding beauty, motherhood, seduction, and sexuality, only to subvert them through artifice. Masks, makeup, prosthetics, and wigs become tools that allow her to blur the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, to augment or diminish the body, and to embody the other. By exposing the very mechanisms of simulation, Ninot turns the codes of beautification and normalization against themselves, revealing the imperatives they impose.
Born in 1999 in Évry-Courcouronnes, France, Noémie Ninot is a visual artist who lives and works in Paris. She studied at École Duperré before earning a Master's degree in Photography and Video from the École des Arts Décoratifs in 2025. She was recently awarded the Grand Jury Prize for Photography at the 40th International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Accessories at Villa Noailles, where she also exhibited her work. Her practice has been presented at Galerie Pavillon (Paris, France), Fondation Sozzani for Race Imboden Company (Paris, France), La Bellevilloise as part of the Burning Womxn Festival (Paris, France), Le Sample (Bagnolet, France), and Dover Street Market (Paris, France). Her work has also been featured in numerous magazines and platforms dedicated to photography and contemporary practices, including Purple Art, Shadowplay Magazine, Odda Magazine, Apollo Magazine, Vogue, Les Inrockuptibles, and Numéro Berlin, among others.
