Description
This is a striking exploration of abstraction and identity, presenting a profile portrait that merges human emotion with the language of geometry. The subject's piercing eye and soft red lips are juxtaposed against a fragmented, angular background, creating a compelling dialogue between the organic and the constructed. The sweeping arcs, sharp triangles, and layered planes invite viewers to trace their own emotional and intellectual pathways through the artwork.
The composition exudes a sense of balance, where every shape and line works in concert to create a harmonious yet dynamic visual experience. The intricate detailing of patterns and the interplay of soft and bold colors suggest an internal duality—an individual simultaneously shaped by external forces and inner depth.
This piece thrives on a complementary and analogous color scheme, with golden ochres and soft blues dominating the palette. The warm red accents add vibrancy and direct the viewer's focus to key areas, such as the lips and subtle angular highlights. The neutral beige tones ground the composition, ensuring the bold shapes and colors retain cohesion. This interplay of colors reflects a delicate equilibrium, akin to the natural harmony found in both human expression and mathematical precision.
Rooted in the ethos of Cubism and Constructivism, invites reflections on identity as a construct—both fluid and multifaceted. The fractured yet connected elements mirror the existential notion that human identity is shaped through fragmented experiences that, when combined, reveal a cohesive whole.
The circular motif of the eye symbolizes perception, both outward and inward, suggesting an exploration of how we see the world and ourselves. The sharp triangles and intersecting lines evoke the Modernist idea of progress through structure and rationality, while the soft curves and human profile counterbalance this with a reminder of the emotional and the ephemeral.
Influenced by the theories of Wassily Kandinsky on spiritual abstraction and Piet Mondrian's pursuit of universal harmony, this piece bridges art and philosophy. It suggests that through the chaos of modern life, harmony can still be achieved—not by eliminating contrasts, but by embracing them as essential components of the whole.
Presentation
Sephora Venites is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans performance, video, painting, photography, and technology.
Her multifaceted approach merges technical precision with intuitive experimentation, crafting visual narratives that transcend aesthetic and conceptual boundaries.
Beyond her work in the visual arts, Sephora is a dedicated actress, bringing a broad perspective to her roles in film and television. Her credits include the independent feature Liquid Love (2018) by Vitor Steinberg, inspired by Zygmunt Bauman's writings; Matthew John's contemporary adaptation of Hedda Gabler ; Andrew Arthur's romantic comedy Love at First Swipe; and the acclaimed series Mr. Selfridge (2013).
A graduate of Barcelona's Institut Català de la Moda in costume design and editing, Sephora applies her expertise in visual storytelling to push the boundaries of art and identity. In collaboration with photographers such as Paul Winstone, Nick Delaney, and Jonas Tucci, she developed a fine art photography series paying tribute to Frida Kahlo, reinterpreting her iconic aesthetic through a contemporary lens.
Her work masterfully bridges traditional and contemporary media, creating art that is both timeless and cutting-edge. Inspired by movements like Dadaism, Sephora's projects explore philosophical themes through vivid visual metaphors, questioning the nature of art itself.
With a bold and visceral style that echoes her Brazilian roots and the lush landscapes of her childhood, Sephora reinvents imagery and narrative within the digital age, challenging the concept of authenticity in a "copy-paste" culture.
