Velvet Underground Red and Yellow Diptych, 2023

Rodrigo Spinel

This artwork vividly showcases Andy Warhol's iconic pop art style. The diptych features two framed images of bananas, both embodying Warhol's bold use of color and contrast. On the left, a pink banana stands out, its vibrant hue challenging traditional perceptions of the fruit. On the right, the classic yellow banana is depicted with a stark, almost gritty realism, emphasizing texture and detail. Both images are set against a crisp white background, allowing the bananas to command attention. Warhol's signature is prominently displayed below each banana, asserting authenticity and influence. These images highlight Warhol's ability to transform everyday objects into thought-provoking art, merging commercial and high art. The juxtaposition of colors and simplicity distills Warhol's commentary on consumerism and the art world, making it a compelling study of pop culture's interplay with art.

As a reflection on the value we give to objects, this series exposes examples of objects that we use daily and for different reasons ended up gaining very high prices. By redrawing them the idea is to generate a conversation about what we consider valuable to ourselves, and how thats a very relative concept.
