Description
The subject stands out against a light background, framed by a deep black band. The composition plays on sharp lines and dense blocks of color. Every detail, from the outline of the ears to the texture of the fur, responds to a desire for formal simplicity.
The choice of support is paramount here. The paper, imported from Japan and China, brings an organic and natural dimension to the whole. This raw texture dialogues with the rigor of the printmaking.
The approach is inspired by the codes of Pop Art while maintaining a contemplative restraint. The result is a stripped-down animal portrait, where visual balance prevails over ornamentation. This work is part of a series of 40 limited editions, created in 2026.
Presentation
Philippe Achermann was born in the South of France, and came to Paris for studying Japanese. He leaves Paris to settle down in Japan in 1994 for five years, and creates his own woodcuts, as small as matches boxes. Back in France, he continues his discovery of wood engravings at Beaux Arts de Paris School. He realises bigger etchings playing with supports. With a certain tast for simplicity and sobriety, he chooses his own paper, exported from Japan and China to give a natural way for his artworks. Till now, his works are monochromes as well as inspired by animal world, by daily life "clichés", vanities, etc.
