Description
El origen de la niebla (The Origin of the Mist) is a portfolio of eight lithographs by Cristina de Middel accompanied by poems by Miguel Ángel Muñoz, published in 2019 by Taller del Prado in an edition of 50 copies. The lithographs are printed on 300 g Conqueror Connoisseur 100% cotton paper in an elongated horizontal format of 59.5 x 29.5 cm, and each portfolio is hand-signed and numbered by its authors. The project brings together image and word in the tradition of the artist's book: the poet's texts and the artist's images do not illustrate one another but enter into a dialogue around landscape, atmosphere and the elusive nature of mist, an apt subject for an artist whose work constantly questions the boundary between document and fiction. The gallery's records describe the palette in terms of blues and greens. Cristina de Middel (Alicante, 1975) is one of the most visible Spanish image-makers of her generation. Trained as a photographer and photojournalist, she achieved international recognition with The Afronauts (2012), a staged project mixing fact and invention, received Spain's Premio Nacional de Fotografía in 2017 and is a member of Magnum Photos. Her collaborations with Taller del Prado have brought her photographic language into original lithography.
Presentation
Cristina de Middel (born 1975 in Alicante, Spain) is a photographer and artist whose work investigates photography's ambiguous relationship to truth. She studied photography at the University of Oklahoma, holds a degree in Fine Arts from Valencia and completed postgraduate studies in photojournalism in Barcelona. After a ten-year career as a photojournalist, she stepped outside the documentary gaze and created "The Afronauts" (2012), a self-published photobook that revisits the failed Zambian space programme of the 1960s through staged reconstructions. The project brought her international recognition, including a nomination for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize and the Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography in 2013. Her later series include "Party", "This Is What Hatred Did", "Sharkification", "Jan Mayen" and "Gentlemen's Club", a long-term project on the male clients of sex work. In 2015 she founded her own publishing house, This Book Is True. She has also produced several limited editions with Taller del Prado. A member of Magnum Photos, she has published more than a dozen books, has exhibited widely around the world, and lives and works between Spain, Mexico and Brazil.
