Description
An original print issued in an edition of one hundred and ninety-five copies, portraying the poet and printer Manuel Altolaguirre (1905-1959). Álvaro Delgado (1922-2016) belonged to the Joven Escuela Madrileña and to the circle formed around Benjamín Palencia in the second Escuela de Vallecas, and portraiture was the constant of his long career, pursued in a thickly worked expressionist idiom that treats the face as terrain rather than likeness. Altolaguirre is an apt subject for a printed homage: a poet of the Generation of 1927, he was above all a printer, whose hand presses in Málaga, Madrid, London and Mexico produced some of the finest Spanish books of the century, and who died in exile. The subtitle Preface indicates a sheet conceived to open a sequence, most probably the frontispiece of a literary portfolio. The sheet measures 48.5 by 38 centimetres, a format shared with other works of the same series in this collection.
Presentation
Álvaro Delgado Ramos (Madrid, 1922 – 2016) was a prominent Spanish figurative painter and draftsman, recognized as a pivotal figure in post-war Spanish Expressionism. Trained at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, he co-founded the Segunda Escuela de Vallecas in the 1940s alongside Benjamín Palencia, capturing the harsh Castilian landscape with raw intensity. His artistic style is characterized by bold brushwork, structural vigour, and dramatic color contrasts that merge modern expressionist energy with classical Spanish traditions. Master of psychological portraiture, rustic still lifes, and thematic series—most notably his celebrated Crónica Astur—Delgado was elected to the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in 1973 and awarded the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes.
