Description
An original print by Josep Guinovart (1927-2007), issued in an edition of fifty copies. Guinovart was among the most physically inventive artists of the Catalan post-war generation, building paintings and reliefs from straw, earth, burnt wood, sacking and maize husks in a practice bound to the agrarian landscape of Agramunt, where the foundation devoted to his work now stands. His graphic production carries that materiality onto the sheet through heavy inking, embossing and collage elements. The Catalan title is deliberately ambiguous, since cap functions both as the noun for head and as a negative determiner, so that the phrase may be read as no mirror or as head mirror; Guinovart, who worked closely with Catalan poets, exploited such doubling regularly. The large format, 100 by 70 centimetres, is among the most ample used by Spanish print workshops of the period. Guinovart received the Premio Nacional de Artes Plásticas in 1982 and is held by the Reina Sofía and the MACBA.
Presentation
After studying at the school of Decorative Arts of Barcelona and his first exhibition in 1948, he won a scholarship in 1953 from the French Institute to study in Paris for five months. On his return to Barcelona, he began creating some abstract artwork resembling a collage. In the 60s, his work took a political perspective. The artist was actively involved in the anti-Franco movement and made many propaganda posters for this cause.
In the 70s, he started creating some unconventional pieces with the constant use of three-dimensional elements, mostly on large scale. He shows through his work that the categories "realism" and "asbtract" are outdated today.
In 1994, a museum dedicated to his work was inaugurated in Agramunt, the town where his mother was born and to which he has always been specially attached.
He died December 2007 at age 80 after a stroke.
