Description
The artwork Trafalgar is part of a series of three artworks made of fishing floats on a wooden support, referring to Napoelonic wars. The fishing float as an object of contemplation entered Patrick Vassort's mind as a young boy. He used to observe them floating for hours, at the end of an invisible line, while sitting quietly in a small boat next to his dad fishing. This artwork captures the beginning of the defeat of Napoleon's army, signified through the fallen fishing floats. The pointy edges of the floats remind the socket bayonets at the tip of the soldiers' weapon, the ping pong balls materialize the waves present during the battle bringing extra chaos to the scene, the black background brings the darkness any war deserves, and the golden sparkles the hints of hope and faith, keeping the soldiers alive. Fishing floats bring an unsuspected deeper meaning to it: they are unsinkable, hence invicinble, unlike humans. Despite this advantage, today fishing floats have literally sunk into oblivion for the mass, they remain a vital accessory to a few aficionados only. Presentation
As a jeweler and gemologist, Patrick Vassort quickly developed an advanced drawing technique through his jewelry designs for Hermès, Bréguet, Boucheron, Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels...
From a very young age, Patrick Vassort admired artists who mastered the color, transparency, and the lightness of snow, such as Camille Pissarro and Caspar David Friedrich, but also J. M. W. Turner for his technique and dreamlike landscapes.
Two artists, contemporary of his parents, truly marked and influenced Patrick Vassort's painting technique: Bernard Buffet (whom he met) through his spontaneous, instinctive, vital technique, where no palette is needed, the paint is spread from the tubes directly onto the canvas; and the renowned specialist of the “Outrenoir", Pierre Soulages, for the texture of his monochrome paintings, which Patrick Vassort transposes to color.
Since the 1970s, Patrick Vassort has continuously been commissioned by major private collectors (paintings, sculptures, jewelry, design...). His artworks are located mainly between Paris, London, Manhattan, the Hamptons, and various mansions across France.
Patrick Vassort decided to go public in 2023 via his first solo exhibition, "Ping... Pong, injonctions contradictoires" (double binds), at the Galerie Soufflot of the Sorbonne University. Since then, he has taken part in two art competitions, in Paris and New York, arranged by the Italian gallery PitturiAmo. From October 18 to 20, 2024, Patrick Vassort will present his latest artwork "La Grande Armée" at the Carrousel du Louvre, during the Art Shopping Fair, with the Austrian PAKS Gallery.
Beyond art, Patrick is an authentic lover and admirer of nature: its grandeur, beauty, and ingenuity. His imagination has been nourished by the beauty of the landscapes he explored in the four corners of the world: through the land as a jeweler, by air as a helicopter and plane pilot, by sea on his sailboat and over the mountains when paragliding or skiing off-piste.
Patrick Vassort, an incredible mix of depth and lightness, softness and complexity, a being in perpetual movement driven by his boundless imagination.
