Description
This wall sculpture plays with perception and light. A polished metal disc advances lightly toward the viewer.
The reflective surface captures the surrounding light to project it onto the white background.
The artist shapes the metal with artisanal precision.
The work of hammering and folding allows the steel to be transformed into a precise reflector.
The result creates a surprising visual illusion. A luminous and curved shape appears on the support, evoking a yellow flame.
Presentation
Kwon Yong-Rae is a South Korean artist born in 1954 who lives and works in Seoul, South Korea. Yong-Rae has been working and experimenting with lights since his college years in the 1980s. Recently, he has cemented his position as a global artist now that his artwork has been displayed in different countries by private collectors and institutions or art fairs such as Polen Capital in Boston, Context 2016 in Miami, Scope Basel in Switzerland or Art Solo in Taipei, Taiwan in 2023 to name a few. His study on lights started in college with paintings of light reflections in his dark basement studio. It led him to produce a unique "unit", which reflects light by itself. The units are made by repeatedly bending and hammering stainless steel pieces with an artisan eye and mindset. When these units are gathered together, his artworks finally reveal the physical attraction of light.
