Biography

Jean-Claude Gautrand was born in 1932 in Sains-en-Gohelle (Pas-de-Calais).

In 1956, he joined the PTT photo-club in Paris and discovered the work of Otto Steinert Subjektive Fotografie. He exhibited for the first time in 1963. Jean-Claude Gautrand co-founded the avant-garde Libre Expression group with: Jean Dieuzaide, Riehl, Guilpin, Bilet, Senil...In 1964, he joined the 30x40 club and became vice-president.

As a journalist, critic or photographer, he has been collaborating with a number of French and International magazines since 1965, including Photo Ciné Revue, Nouveau Photo Cinéma, Photojournal and since 1990, Le Photographe.

Since this date as well, works of Jean-Claude Gautrand were bought by several museums, galleries and collections (Bibliothèque nationale, musée Réattu, musée Cantini, Paris Audiovisuel, galerie du Château d'eau (Toulouse), centre Georges-Pompidou, bibliothèque historique de la ville de Paris, BDIC, George Eastman House, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston...).
