Jean Cocteau (5 July 1889, Maisons-Laffitte – 11 October 1963, Milly-la-Forêt) was a French writer, playwright, artist, sculptor, draftsman, and filmmaker. He became a member of the Académie française in 1955.
Jean Cocteau was one of the artists who marked the 20th century. He was friends with numerous avant-garde artists and an inspiration to them. A trendsetter, he inspired the artists of his generation creating portraits with a genius touch, always original and showing rare intuition and talent. From his early works to the issues in his later works, a certain "difficulty of being" is at the heart of his creation.
A multi-talented artist, Jean Cocteau first of all considered himself a poet and considered that every artwork is like poetry.
