Artwork location: United Kingdom

This artwork presents a serene winter landscape dominated by a vast, snow-covered expanse. The foreground features clusters of small, colorfully dressed figures that dot the white canvas, suggesting skiers or hikers, introducing a lively contrast against the monochrome backdrop. The majestic mountain range in the background is rendered with minimalistic, sharp lines, their pale gray silhouettes towering against the pristine sky. The composition's simplicity highlights the interplay between human presence and nature's grandeur. The starkness of the snow amplifies the sense of isolation yet evokes a communal spirit among the figures. The use of scale emphasizes the mountains' imposing beauty, while the sparse detail invites viewers to imagine the crisp, cold air, creating a sense of tranquility and expansiveness. This artwork's unique approach blends minimalism with a narrative element, capturing the essence of a vibrant yet peaceful winter scene.

Presentation

Artist Statement:

Stephanie develops her highly recognizable Lowry style paintings of tiny human figures over the years. She channels her fascination with movements and connectivity of people in her latest series, featuring popular sporting events such as golf, tennis, skiing and marathons.

Each figure, rendering in artistic and figurative strokes, captures the fluidity of life in different settings, evoking a sense of freedom and the vibrant pulse of city life. Their colourful silhouettes against the stark white canvas convey both individuality and community.

Stephanie wants viewers to focus on the details of people. The minimalist background gives viewers space for imagination, applying the contents to their own experiences. Each figure is delicately painted using tiny paint brushes. The composition continues around the edges, adding a three-dimensional element to the artwork.

Education:

Stephanie began her training in oil paintings at the early age of 11. After graduating from the London School of Economics in 2001, she continues to explore her potential in fine art, completing two postgraduate diploma courses at City and Guilds of London Art School and Christies Education, as well as a Masters degree in Museum and Gallery Management at the London City University.
