Presentation

André Masson was a renowned French painter, engraver, and illustrator. His work, marked by a great diversity of styles and influences, falls within the surrealist movement and often transcends the boundaries between the figurative and the abstract.

Masson experienced a youth marked by World War I, where he was severely wounded. This event had a profound influence on his later artistic work, leading him to explore themes such as violence, sexuality, and the human condition.

In the 1920s, the artist became one of the most important members of the surrealist movement, alongside André Breton and Salvador Dalí, among others. His style is characterized by organic forms, fluid lines, and bold use of color.

In the following years, Masson emigrated to the United States to escape the rise of Nazism in Europe. There, his style evolved towards more abstract compositions, often inspired by natural landscapes and mythological elements.

After World War II, Masson returned to France and continued to produce prolific work until the end of his life. His paintings and engravings continued to explore universal themes such as love, death, and transcendence, while integrating new techniques and artistic influences.

In 2024, André Masson is in the spotlight with two major exhibitions: "André Masson: There Is No Finished World" at the Centre Pompidou-Metz (March 29 - September 2, 2024), featuring over 200 works, and "André Masson: The Revolutionary Surrealism" at the Galerie Jean-François Cazeau in Paris (September 27 - December 21, 2024). These retrospectives explore his influence on Surrealist art, his approach to automatic drawing, and his artistic commitment in response to the upheavals of the 20th century. His legacy continues to inspire the contemporary art market, reaffirming his place among the great masters of Surrealism.
