Biography

Raymond Depardon is a French photographer, filmmaker and journalist whose work has profoundly marked the history of documentary photography . Coming from a rural background, he discovered photography at a very early age on the family farm before moving to Paris to become a reporter. In 1966, he co-founded the Gamma agency, then joined Magnum Photos in 1979. He then covered major international conflicts such as the Algerian War, Vietnam and Chad, while developing a personal perspective on social, political and human realities.

Alongside photography, Depardon established himself as a major documentary filmmaker. He made committed and introspective films such as Reporters, Délits flagrants, and La Vie moderne, which explore the worlds of journalism, justice, and the rural world. He is recognized for his sober and direct style, based on patient observation, listening, and the absence of commentary. His photographic works, notably the series La France de Raymond Depardon and his portraits of farmers, capture the landscapes and faces of the French territory with great humanity. He uses view cameras and often favors natural light to restore the essence of reality.

Raymond Depardon is also behind major cultural projects, such as the creation of Le BAL in Paris, a space dedicated to contemporary documentary photography. His work has been exhibited in major French and international institutions and has received numerous awards for both his photography and his films. In 2024, he became the first photographer to receive the Prix de la Bibliothèque nationale de France. A key figure in the field of committed and humanist imagery, he continues to inspire photographers, filmmakers, and journalists around the world.
