Presentation

In her paintings and prints of contorted female figures, Jillian Evelyn explores the everyday anxieties and societal expectations that define the female experience. Evelyn studied illustration at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit.

In 2017, she left her job as a footwear designer and moved to Los Angeles to pursue painting full time. Evelyn breaks down her subjects into graphic mixes of curves and sharp angles, using a limited palette to accentuate their flatness against their backgrounds.

Her figures gestures are seemingly mundane but express a discomfort that implicitly stems from the sitters' private worries, doubts, and fears. Although she primarily works with acrylic and house paint on wood panels, Evelyn has also produced painted ceramics, murals, and printed editions.
