Biography

Fabienne Verdier, born March 3, 1962 in Paris, is a contemporary French painter renowned for her dynamic and innovative approach to abstract art. From an early age, she developed a passion for art and decided to specialize in classical Chinese calligraphy and painting. In 1985, she travelled to China to study at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing, where she believed that the last great calligraphy masters, having survived the bans on the practice of traditional art during the Cultural Revolution, were still teaching.

Verdier's experiences in China have profoundly shaped her artistic style. She immerses herself in the techniques and philosophies of Eastern art, which she combines with Western abstract expressionism. Her works are characterized by energetic, fluid brushstrokes, reflecting her exploration of the relationship between movement, energy and space. Using large brushes with Indian ink hung from the ceiling, requiring two-handed manipulation, she creates simplified compositions characterized by dashes, circular shapes and long, curving lines.

Verdier's large-format canvases feature a vibrant interplay of colors and textures, evoking a sense of dynamism and depth. Through her art, she seeks to convey the interconnectedness of cultural and artistic traditions, bridging the gap between East and West. Her work incorporates elements of physicality, Taoist beliefs and attempts to visualize sound.

Despite her distance from traditional artistic norms, Fabienne Verdier has gained international recognition for her innovative approach to painting. Her work can be found in prestigious collections such as the Musée National d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Honda Group in Tokyo and the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich. Her work has been exhibited in major art institutions worldwide, solidifying her place as a leading contemporary artist.
