Description
Tanc's work is clearly influenced by abstract expressionist artists (the artist speaks of Rothko, Pollock, Reinhardt, Hartung and especially Franz Kline as sources of inspiration in his practice). Tanc's practice has taken a turn: since his New York exhibition at the Catherine Ahnell Gallery, the artist has left aside the explosion of color that marked his paintings and is now more interested in shades of black, linear variations and automatic writing. This new orientation evokes the work of Henri Michaux. Tanc is also a composer and certain notions of electronic and experimental music undoubtedly inhabit his work; the obsession with rhythm and pulsation tends to produce an intense, fascinating painting, with a unique vibratory dimension. He exhibits regularly in France, but colored or grey, his work has gained international notoriety with exhibitions in Germany (Skalitzers Contemporary Art), the United Kingdom (The French Art Studio), Morocco (David Bloch Gallery) or New York (Catherine Ahnell Gallery). He is one of the most promising artists of his generation.

About the artwork:

While the manuscript tends to disappear today, Tanc explores the aesthetic dimension of writing. Inspired by his high school years, where he took notes and produced pages that were as illegible as they were pretty, he developed an automatic writing system, entirely made with spray paint, halfway between calligraphy and graffiti. The viewer can find meaning, even words, but the goal is not to read but to feel the rhythm of the writing. The large-format and often monochrome works reveal new forms, a new alphabet. It is not known whether the writing goes from left to right or vice versa. Half-abstract, half-figurative, each work is conceived as a landscape, with an accumulation of lines that end up creating a horizon. Aided by effects of glow and dullness that the glossy paint gives to certain places on the canvas, this new series speaks of rhythm and frequencies, revealing a music in which the eye can get lost and escape.

Presentation

Born in 1979 in Paris. Lives and works in Paris.

Tanc has already exhibited his work worldwide. What sets him apart is the uniqueness of his style, a characteristic that becomes clearer when you learn that Tanc grew up surrounded by graffiti. He believes that street art is ephemeral and that the act itself is more important than the result. For him, "being an artist is a way of life"; the commitment must be total and integrity absolute.

In the early 2000s, he focused on studio work and immediately distinguished himself from traditional graffiti artists with his line-based approach. A quest for synthesis. First of his name, then of tags in general, then of people, music, and finally of his favorite subject: life.

Primarily based on line, his work doesn't strive for perfection but rather spontaneity. It's his state of mind that defines its density and rigor. His heartbeat drives his arm like a metronome; he mustn't try to control this flow but simply understand the composition that emerges, a balance between his conscious and unconscious mind.

He composes his music and his canvases spontaneously. Whether dense or light, rigorous or deconstructed, Tanc doesn't play; he lives his art. He signs his canvases "Tanc" just as he has signed walls with his tags since adolescence. This discipline is first and foremost the instinctive outlet for a need for expression: he reclaims urban space by forcefully shouting his name to the city. Soon, the letters disappear, and Tanc embarks on an abstract formal exploration. By focusing his work on line and color, he renews classical pictorial research by confronting it with the raw energy of street art: the predominance of action, the perfection of the gesture, the acceptance of chance, and the expression of a strong singularity. Above all, his works are striking for their intensity, their musicality, and the vibration of light and textures. The artist's action, energy, and emotion touch the viewer in the most sensual, intimate, and immediate way.
