Takesada Matsutani (b. 1937) is a Japanese artist known for his innovative works that combine traditional Japanese techniques with modern abstract expressionism. Born in Osaka, Matsutani began his artistic journey studying Western-style painting at the Kyoto City University of Arts before moving to Paris in the 1960s, where he became associated with the Nouveau Réalisme movement.
Matsutani is perhaps best known for his use of vinyl glue as a primary medium, a material he manipulates to create tactile, organic surfaces. His works often explore texture, layering, and fluidity, using the viscosity of glue to evoke both controlled and spontaneous forms. The artist has also incorporated elements of calligraphy, the human body, and natural forms into his art, creating a unique visual language that bridges Eastern and Western aesthetics.
Throughout his career, Matsutani has exhibited widely across the globe, with his works featured in prestigious institutions such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His contributions to contemporary art have earned him recognition as one of Japan's foremost avant-garde artists.
