Layered portraits where personal stories meet collective memory.

Biography

Jole (Annejole Jacobs–de Jongh) is a Dutch contemporary artist known for her modern mixed-media portraits, each conceived as a visual narrative. She creates both autonomous work and commissioned portraits for private clients and corporate collections.

Jole's practice begins with extensive research. Using a wide range of digital images, photographs and texts, she develops layered compositions that are subsequently translated onto canvas through a combination of printmaking and painting. The backgrounds of her portraits consist of multiple layers of digital imagery, text fragments and scanned originals gathered specifically in relation to the portrayed subject. Her visual sources range from art history, music and literature to historical references and contemporary culture.

Inspired by her surroundings, nature, human emotion and social dynamics, Jole draws equally from current events, media and diverse cultures, cities and landscapes. Her work reflects an ongoing dialogue between personal stories and collective memory, resulting in portraits that are both visually rich and conceptually layered.
