Description
In December, I worked on a series of paintings titled “Metamorphoses."
Each piece began with a bright, saturated background and was then shaped as if carved out through the negative space of that background.
Through these works, I wanted to convey that we, as human beings, are inwardly something boundless: vivid, blurred, chaotic, formless, and not fully understanding ourselves. Only through what surrounds us do we begin to recognize our boundaries. We start to understand who we are at our core, where we begin and where we end, what defines us, what feels normal to us, and how we take shape.
In isolation, it is impossible to understand any of this.
In these paintings, it was also important for me to show what we, as a society, do to one another — how our actions toward each other can be destructive or, on the contrary, constructive, depending on how a person is later able to process and live with them.
These works are also deeply about scars — about experiences after which a person cannot return to who they once were. One may move to a new level or change for better or worse, but returning to the previous state is no longer possible.
I believe that every person is the creator of their own reality. We are responsible for who we are and who we become. Yet understanding oneself, refining oneself, is a process that cannot be completed alone.
With great courage, we must treat what exists within us with respect. But we can truly understand ourselves only in the presence of another person.
For me, what was essential in this work was the feeling of vulnerability — the moment of entering into contact with another human being. A sense of fragility, and at the same time hope: the hope that you will be able to withstand this contact with courage, discover something new within yourself, and transform it into something beautiful.
Only through great effort, courage, honesty, and sincerity can one create something truly meaningful out of life. I also wish to draw attention to what we do to one another — and to always remember the significance of our presence in the lives of others, how important it is to be gentle, conscious, and respectful toward those close to us, to accept and support one another, and not to inflict wounds that may never fully heal
Presentation
Darina Komorowski is a contemporary artist and psychologist whose work bridges fine art, symbolism, and the exploration of human emotion.
Born in Kazakhstan and currently based in the UAE, she creates paintings that invite viewers into deeply personal yet universally resonant inner landscapes.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Design from the Faculty of Art and Graphics at Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University (2013–2018), where she mastered both classical techniques and modern design approaches. Her artistic vision is further enriched by her background in psychology, adding depth, meaning, and emotional resonance to each piece.
From 2016 to 2021, Darina conducted art workshops and painting classes, sharing her expertise in acrylic, oil, and mixed media techniques with students of all levels. She has also completed numerous commissioned projects, creating large-scale murals and wall paintings for restaurants, hospitals, private residences, and commercial spaces, integrating art into both public and intimate environments.
Her works have been exhibited in prestigious venues such as the A. Kasteyev State Museum of Arts and the University Museum of Abai Kazakh National Pedagogical University in Almaty, Kazakhstan. Today, her paintings are held in private collections across Kazakhstan, UAE, Turkey, Poland, and other international locations.
