Biography
Gabriel Marian, visual artist, curator and founder of the Nano gallery is interested in the realm between abstraction and figuration, that he explores with an ironic view on art history, in visual projects that address issues like myopia, calligraphy+graffiti or the microscopic life. In his recent works, he uses complex layers of lines, signs and shapes to recreate vaguely familiar images and structures, sometimes using famous texts from world's literature.
The artist graduated from the Cluj Art University in 2011 with a MA in Fine Art and now prepares a PhD degree at the same university. His work is a part of the Benetton art collection – “Romanian artists", presented in Italy in 2014 (along with an art book published in Treviso).
It was also included in the 'Mostra collettiva d'arte contemporanea', Turin, Palazzo Birago di Vische (2015), 'Art Safari', Bucharest (2015), “V.I.C." art show in Paris (Atelier Z, 2013), at the Art Museum in Cluj (2008) and 'Salon des Dépendants', a group exhibition at Fondation des États-Unis, Paris (2004).
He has enjoyed solo exhibitions in Cluj (Paintbrush Factory and other galleries) and Paris (Harriet Woolley gallery) and he participated in a series of graphic projects organized by the German Cultural Centre and the Comics Club Cluj.
He also published a series of articles on art history in Dilema Veche and Echinox (2001-2005).
Marian's work is represented in European and U.S. collections.
