Born in 1976 - Australia
Rebecca Spencer Nungurrayi is an Australian painter born in 1976 in the central desert of Alice Springs, and grew up in the Aboriginal community of Yuendumu. She is part of the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, a center of aboriginal art whose purpose is to make the aboriginal culture known all around the country.
Rebecca Spencer Nungurrayi paints the story of her ancestors, which had been passed on to her parents. The traditions and myths of the community are transmitted from generation to generation orally. The artist's paintings are a representation of her land, the plants and animals that surround it.
She uses the traditional symbols and colors of her community's art to make a modern interpretation of her culture.
