Born in 1931 - Belgium
Born in 1931 in Moen, Belgium, Rudi Pillen became a world citizen with a particular love for Africa where he resided a number of years.
The most remarkable and yet at the same time the most characteristic aspect of the oeuvre by Rudi Pillen is the fact that, on the one hand, one can relate it to numerous divergent currents and movements within modern art, and that, on the other hand, it is undeniably marked by its thoroughly individual style.
This is not the only apparent contradiction which the artist manages to bridge in his oeuvre; there is, amongst other, this is most important bifurcation which lies at the basis of modern art, namely the categorical difference between abstraction and figuration.
It seems as if the figuration is coming to the fore from the abstract background, yet at the same time vanishes within it. However, both are connected by means of an emphatically pictorial approach to painting which bestows attention upan all of its different parameters such as palette, brushwork, linearity and its opposite; thick layers of paint.
