Tsham

Democratic Republic of Congo  • 1963

Presentation

Tsham is a Congolese artist born in 1963 in Lubunz, Democratic Republic of Congo. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts of Kinshasa from which he graduated in 1989. He currently lives and works in Kinshasa.

Tsham specializes in drawing with a black Bic as well as in the elaboration of African statues. For more than twenty years, he only used his pencil to trace on sheets of canson paper, shapes that represent masks and faces. He has been reusing colors for some time, specially using watercolor and colored pencils, which allow him to dye the background, or to accentuate the presence of certain characters.
Tsham gets inspired by the first arts, Africa's main richness, according to him, to create his canvases where the profusion of codes and motifs become hypnotizing. Congo is represented in a subjective way, and the viewer can admire it through the artist's look of this charming universe.
Tsham draws his inspiration from the news. He paints everything while listening to an international radio, waiting for the slightest news to nourish his already dense imagination.

He exhibits his work in Kinshasa, in the Bilembo Space in 2015.
