Presentation

Aicha Aidara was born in Senegal in 1969. She graduated from the Ecole Nationale des Arts de Dakar, which in turn opened up new horizons. Her works with thready indexes and sober colors are the hallmark of a know-how, in symbiosis with painting and weaving.

She has been deeply influenced by the artistic world since her early youth in Dagana, Aicha Aidara grew up around painting pots and brushes which belonged to her father: Amadou Ady Aidara, a great artist. This could be a wonderful example of the saying " like father like daughter". After her family settled down in Dakar in 1995, she spent 4 years at Ecole Nationale des Arts de Dakar, as she fulfilled the eligibility conditions.

She's fond of her traditions, so she put a lot into her research on myth and the aesthetic scope around the woven loincloth. This cloth is a big part of her culture and is present in many traditional ceremonies, may that be weddings, baptisms or circumcisions. This aspect is highlighted on her painting and is combined with thread.

An almost spider-like technique demonstrating that Aicha needs a lot of time and patience in order to create her extremely original paintings, But at the same time, her admirers need to be careful while being carried away between thread and pieces of sober colored paper, stuck on an evolutionary painting. Her spinning thread patterns are inspired by weavers, moreover they are a reason to protect her customs and traditions, through her creations interspersed with several materials in varied shapes and sizes.

Works of Aicha Aidara fortify and accentuate her identity but also set up a dialogue between tradition and a groundbreaking artistic approach, leaving a very personal hallmark.
