Steven Cox

Born in 1986 - United Kingdom

Scavenging cities in search of the sublime though discovering it in the grittiest of places, the abstract paintings of Steven Cox reflect his interest in deconstructing lowbrow surfaces through a formalist lens. A poetic recycling of colour and texture occurs within Cox’s practice where he investigates the formal properties associated within painting by connecting his work to the texturally rich surfaces and vandalized walls found within city environments. By utilizing a unique transferral process, his bold and painterly works blur the boundary between the found and fabricated.

By examining the natural breakdown of materiality through the passing of time, Cox’s new brushless transfer paintings question the overlap between the natural and constructed. His surfaces that are reminiscent of chipped walls and glue residue advertisement boards highlight the formal qualities of such autonomous surfaces. His works see him explore and question ones interpretation of natural decay and constructed decomposition.

Steven Cox (b.1986) lives and works in Edinburgh, Scotland. Cox has had solo and group exhibitions with Halsey McKay Gallery, New York, Annarumma Gallery, Naples, Ana Cristea Gallery, New York, Galerie Jacob Bjorn, Aarhus and V1 Gallery, Copenhagen. Cox was listed as one of Modern Painters 24 Artists to Watch in 2015. To date his work has been reviewed by Artnet, Modern Painters, Copenhagen Contemporary and Artdaily, amongst others. His work is collected internationally and he will have his work featured within his first Museum group exhibition in Italy, 2016.

Steven Cox is also a curator and the founder of Hunted Projects, an online interview platform featuring internationally emerging and established artists.
