Luis Camnitzer

Born in: 1937

Luis Camnitzer was born in Germany, in 1937. He grew up in Uruguay but is currently based in New York. He is an artist, as well as an essayist, teacher, curator, theorist and art critic.

He founded the New York Graphic Workshop with artists, Liliana Porter and Guillermo Castillo, dedicated to studying the art of printing, especially the importance of its development, and its scope as an artistic medium.

A precursor to the Conceptual Art movement of the 1960s, he focused on the topics of social injustice, repression and institutional critique. His work thrives on humour and the use of political language. He explores the political dynamics which have played out across Latin America, as well as in the United States. He has been guided by European figures, such as René Magritte and Stéphane Mallarmé, whilst also heavily influenced by Simón Rodríguez.
