Presentation

Yinarupa, born in 1958, is the daughter of Anatjari Tjampitjinpa, one of the founding members of the Aboriginal pictorial movement, and the sister of Ray James Tjangala and Mantua Nangala, also accomplished artists.

A patrol brought them to Papunya in 1963 and she left the traditional nomadic life.

She was also one of the wives of Yala Yala Gibbs Tjungurrayi, another influential artist (who died in 1998). Yinarupa became familiar with modern techniques while helping her elderly husband complete the pointillist background of his paintings.

She started her own career as a painter in 1996 like the other women of Kintore and Kiwirrkurra. Yinarupa's unique art is to use a combination of traditional and contemporary symbols providing an aerial view of the Pintupi area.
