Presentation

British artist Hush creates surprising works that use graffiti, collage and mixed techniques, in which he brings to life a traditional Japanese figure: the geisha. Mixing new techniques with tradition can be risky, but the artist's portraits, visible in the streets and in art galleries in Asia, Europe and the United States, transcend barriers.

Listed as one of the 'Top 20 Up and Coming Artists' of 2016 by The Independent, Hush was born in Newcastle, Great Britain. Today he lives and works in Newcastle. He studied graphic design at the Newcastle School of Art and Design for 5 years.

After his studies, he travelled and lived in Asia, first in Hong Kong and then in Japan, where he worked as a toy designer. He became fascinated by the representation of women and sexuality in Japanese culture and by Asian women that adopt Western fashion, creating a cultural mix, juxtaposing traditional fabrics and other elements with European-style objects and clothing.

His technique has been perfected over the course of his travels, he is inspired by graffiti and tagging, by the walls of cities covered with posters, by mangas and Japanese pornography. Hush perfectly masters the art of "layering", the superposition of techniques, but also that of contrasting aesthetics. He layers aerosol paints, silkscreens and inks, producing a collage effect; the black, white and silver surfaces are highlighted by bright, pop colours.

In an interview with LA Weekly about his street art pieces, Hush said that "you're adding something to the environment and the environment adds something to the piece" when working on walls. In the works he creates in his studio, he tries to reproduce this process: he works on some of his canvases for more than a year, gradually adding elements, tags, colours. His creative process, visual language and techniques create a unique artistic language.
