Artwork location: Ukraine

"Stone" by Olena Shtepura conveys the profound contemplation of a threshold, as the artist eloquently puts it: "One, only one step separates you from the leap into the abyss." The work presents the viewer with a first-person perspective atop a stone cliff, the churning waters beneath a canvas for projecting one's fears and hopes. The painting beckons the question of whether the sun-kissed opposite shore is worth the uncertainty of the leap. Shtepura's use of a large canvas amplifies the grandeur of this moment, utilizing a palette that underscores the interplay between light and dark, the known and the unknown.

Olena Shtepura

Ukraine  • 1994

Olena Shtepura is a young professional painter and set designer. She holds a master degree in arts from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture in Kyiv, Ukraine and is a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. Olena is actively participating in group exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad (over 30 exhibitions for the last 5 years), takes part in national and international art competitions, festivals, and art residences. Recently Olena also had a few personal exhibitions. Since the beginning of war in 2022 Ms. Shtepura participated in a number of exhibitions of Ukrainian art around Europe and United Stated.

Olena works in such styles as surrealism, expressionism, sometimes moving to the edge of abstraction. Olena likes to use large canvases, using bold and contrasting colours, and many of her paintings may be easily called "statement artworks".
