Artistic Tableware

Artistic tableware is the art form commonly associated with the act of dining. It is attached to large, communal meals, the presentation and overall service of food, the decoration of the table, and flatware. It exists for the sole purpose of heightening gastronomic and sensory pleasures.

Objects included under the umbrella of artistic tableware include but are not limited to an arrangement of dishes, earthenware utensils, glassware, crystalware, and porcelain. Beyond the array of materials, artistic tableware is designed with precision and care, like any other type of art object. And just like any other medium of artistic expression, artistic tableware has evolved throughout the centuries.

Looking back, it was under the rule of Henry III of France, that forks became widespread. The proper utilization of cutlery varies from country to country, and from one culture to another. However, it is quite common that these practices, however different from one to the other, are practiced within families, in order for younger generations to learn proper table manners.

The term tableware or flatware also refer to specific items for the table: vases, cutlery, glasses, plates, kitchen utensils, linens, napkins, tablecloth, and candleholders. Beyond the items themselves, there is a specific placement for each article for eating, or rather, for each course of a meal. Utensils, plates, glasses, etc., are all strategically placed in a particular order and setting, and the placement depends on the country.

In addition, tableware has also inspired many contemporary artists. Several artists have used their talents on plates, making them true works of art and collectors' items. This is the case, for example, with Picasso's ceramic objects.

Just like many other art forms, artistic tableware is also impacted by trends and changing art genres over time. Explore a collection of items that will add an artistic flair to any fine dining experience!
