Description
The Ravaged One is a figurative sculpture that stands as a presence both fragile and resilient. The body, reduced to its essentials, is composed of a fragment of wood worn by time, evoking a spine or a human torso. This formal simplicity highlights the expressive power of the face, crafted from a metal piece salvaged from a wrecked boat, marked by erosion and the passage of time.
This damaged, fragmented face has been reconstructed by the artist through the addition and "suture" of welded metal pieces, the visible traces of which evoke facial reconstruction techniques. The welds thus become deliberate scars, bearing witness to both the trauma and the repair. Despite the violence suggested by the missing and torn pieces, the work exudes a quiet dignity and expresses a profound will to stand tall, to live, and to resist.
Presentation
Hélène Heyberger is a visual artist and sculptor whose practice focuses on metal and the reuse of everyday materials, combined with wood weathered by time. Her approach is rooted in a reflection on the transformation of matter and the valorization of discarded objects and fragments. Using industrial parts, mechanisms, and patinated wood, she creates figurative sculptures in which human and animal figures occupy a central place. Traces of wear, marks of time, and the unique history of each material are deliberately preserved and become a distinct artistic language in their own right. The dialogue between metal, an industrial material, and wood, an organic material marked by erosion, nourishes a rigorous and sensitive style, imbued with poetry and often punctuated by a touch of humor, inviting the viewer to an encounter that is at once accessible, narrative, and reflective, exploring the memory of objects and their metamorphosis.
