Description

An art historical work that greatly fascinated the artist Thomas Lange was the Brancacci Chapel in S. Maria del Carmine in Florence with the frescoes by Masaccio, Masolino and Filippino Lippi. In numerous works, Thomas Lange uses motifs from these frescoes, alienating them in a painterly way and focusing on the individual human aspect. This work on paper is part of his exploration of the Florentine frescoes. He takes two of the numerous heads from Masaccio's fresco "Resurrection of the Son of Theophilus" in sketch form. Lange stages the look upwards in the central head and, to the right below it, rather quietly, the ambiguous look downwards or inwards. In the background, a cross is drawn with thin lines. The whole thing is embedded in and overlaid by Lange's typical spotty painting style. A black figure seems to float away in the direction of the central head. This work ambivalently inspires reflection on the where from and where to of human existence.

Mixed media: oil paint, collage, drawing on paper and transparent foil in brochure cover (AL no. 427)

In the early 1980s, he developed a close relationship with the so-called "Young Wild Ones" who tried to put painting back at the center of art in a neo-expressionist style. From the very beginning, Lange avoided belonging to established tendencies in the art world. His work was devoted to idiosyncratic creations, in which he liked to set the scene against the backdrop of Italian visual culture (Masaccio, Masolino, Lippi) as well as portraits of people from his environment, whom he placed as emblematic figures in purely painterly contexts. To this day, his works are shown in numerous exhibitions not only in Germany, but also in Italy, France, Belgium and the USA.
