Biography
Lison Bombay was born in 1971. She lives and works in Paris.
Sculptor, visual artist, she works with wood carving, molding, enamelling, bronze as lost-wax casting, acrylic paint, linocut, etching glass, photography, contemporary embroidery...
"As far as I remember, I have always liked to discover new techniques and handle new materials for
creation. As a child, I started to learn sculpture with clay and I practiced it for many years. Then, I was attracted by bronze. I learnt several techniques, as lost-wax casting with African craftsmen in Cameroon, and other classic techniques in Europe.
For a few years I also explored photography and videos so I could produce short films. One of them was selected at the Environmental Festival in Paris and won a prize. I was keen to learn other techniques and experienced linocut, pen-and-ink drawing which are still present in my work. Embroidery unexpectedly emerged in my artistic work at a period when I was looking for a new way of expression.
For five years, I used to work essentially black and white threads embroided on white fabrics inserted in canvases. I am now experiencing a wider range of colors and materials, including studs, optical fibre and 3D pen.
Thread expresses my style, I like the gesture, the meticulousness, the preciseness of the drawing, and being calm while working on canvas. What I like with embroidery is that I work on it anywhere, it’s a social activity. My inspiration is linked to my childhood, juvenile imagination nourishing both sweet and weird subjects."
