Pedro Mata Saralegui

Spain • 1949

Biography

Born in Donostia (Basque Country) in 1949, completes his studies in Fine Arts in Barcelona where he founds many art collectives and starts developing his own style.

His artistic production in the domain of sculpture, combines traditional elements such as wood and iron, with modern ones like water or sand, to create incorporeal-like sculptures with a strong symbolic charge over the shadows they project. Saralegui uses the shadow as a key element in his productions for we relate them to concepts such as mystery, fascination, darkness, fear… We see that in his graphic production he proceeds likewise, where he seeks the traditional forms of the discipline and combines them with modern means.

Saralegui’s work then becomes suggestion and game though sensorial effects that make us think about the limits of matter and shape.
